Introduction

On Sunday, September 2, Saint Luke’s will resume its regular fall schedule, with Holy Eucharist at 8:00 and 10:00 AM.  The 8 AM Eucharist will follow Rite I and the 10 AM Eucharist will conform to Rite II.  Kent and the Choir will participate in the 10 AM Eucharist.

--From Kent Jones:

I’m writing this in July, but mentally, I'm already in September.  Some things will be different:  The choir roster won't be entirely the same; we will have some new singers, which makes me happy.  Some things will be the same:  The level of the music we offer will be just as high.  Some things will be easier:  For those of you who have been around for a couple of years, the service music and even the psalms will be easier and more familiar.  I maintain that there is no choir better at sight reading and interpreting the psalms.  And there's a three-year cycle, and I've been at St. Luke's for three years.  Coincidence?

But there are some noteworthy changes for the 2007-2008 choir season: Choir rehearsals will no longer be on Thursday nights.  We still warm up at 9:00 on Sunday mornings.  After church and the coffee break, we will rehearse from 11:30-1:00.  Thursday night rehearsals are logistically difficult and sometimes impossible for some people.  My goal is to keep the high standards we have set while recognizing that we live in Southern California, home of the worst traffic in the U.S.

We are losing Andrea Birkman.  This does not make me happy, of course.  Andrea is a sweetheart and one of the best PR people the St. Luke's Choir has ever had.   But her father's health is declining, and she has decided that she has to make her family in Texas her priority.  I have started advertising for a new section leader, and can use all the help I can get.

As to the season's schedule, I won't finalize it until I have discussed it with Fr Gary.  But for openers:

Homecoming is Sunday, September 16.   I am planning a spectacular anthem that just about all of you know already, and the hymns will include both rip-snorters and crowd-pleasers.

The annual Men's Evensong for St. Luke's Day is Sunday, October 21 at 4:00.  It will be bigger and better than ever, with a higher level of confidence among the singers -- AND we will be singing Vaughan Williams.  Be sure to mark the date.

Much as I enjoy having the church to myself before the summer services, I can't wait to see you all again.

Our first Annual Homecoming Celebration will take place on Sunday, September 16th, immediately after the 10:00 AM service.  We will have a barbecue, music, games and fun.  Admission is either a pack of hot dogs or hamburgers to feed you and your family and friends.  We will also be looking for donations of paper goods, salads, deserts, drinks and buns.  A sign-up sheet will be available beginning September 2nd in Guild Hall.  For more information, please contact Mike Wagner at 626-303-3441 or 626-221-9503.

The Teen Club continues on Tuesday evenings in the downstairs Youth Room, from 7:00-9:00 p.m.  Study Hall and Tutoring will now be part of the club.  Study Hall and Tutoring will be from 7-8, with fellowship and fun from 8-9.  Admission is free, but you must bring something to read or study.  And starting on Sunday, September 9th at 5:00 p.m., St. Luke's will be hosting Youth Evening Prayer.  This service will take place on the 2nd Sunday of every month.  The service will be based on the traditional evening prayer liturgy with a focus on youth.  For more information please contact Mike Wagner at 626-303-3441 or 626-221-9503.

We are going to do the Lunch Bunch Pot Luck at 11:30 am on Sat. 8th Sept. in Guild Hall. I am going to share my experiences as a first time tourist in New York city on a theatre tour that I took in May. The tour was organized through the Pasadena Playhouse. All are welcome to the lunch & bring a dish to share.

Stewardship Sunday will be on September 30.
